The Phoenix Magazine - "Odor Solution"

The Phoenix magazine is the official publication for members of the United Ostomy Associations of America (UOAA). Half of each subscription directly supports the UOAA and is the main source of revenue for the national, non-profit ostomy support association. Published quarterly (March, June, September and December), The Phoenix ostomy magazine is published by Ian Settlemire from his office in California. Each issue is created to provide ostomy information, patient education and inspiration to live a full and rewarding life after ostomy surgery.

September 2009 issue featured a thoughtful comment from a person with an ileostomy for 30 years facing an odor problem. It can be found in the "Ask Nurse Muchoney" section titled, "Odor Solution." The patient stated that they had received little guidance regarding odor management following their sugery. After finding that this issue affected everyone in their house, they realized something had to be done. They found Devrom advertised in a magazine and gave it a try and quickly found that this simple medicine eliminated their odor problem!
For some, odor is not an issue at all, but others face a tremendous problem and have found relief using Devrom chewable tablets/capsules.

Devrom can be purchased from your ostomy supplier or a pharmacy. Also, you can buy online at several sites, one of which is the Parthenon Company.

What are the treatments for flatulence?

Although not a life threatening matter, it may be a socially cripalling with the sound and most notablly the odor. For this matter, there are a few options for the gassy person:
Several foods are known to be prone to causing gas such as: cabbage, onions, broccoli, beans, dairy goods, corn, and carbonated beverages. Some people may be more sensitive than others to these foods, so it requires some personal experimenting. There are a few products available to take by mouth to address odor as well. Beano, provides enzymes that are said to prevent the gas formation by assisting in carbohydrate digestion.
Several chlorophyll based products (Nullo, Bodymint, Derifil) exist claiming to address body odor ranging from your feet to your breath. These products along with Beno are available at a nutrition store. Some people recommend using a charcoal product (Charcocaps), but this is usually a bad idea as activated charcoal will absorb micronutrients in the body which could cause nutritional problems with chronic use.
Finally, a bismuth subgallate based product called Devrom is an internal deodorant which works to eliminate the odor from flatulence and stool. FDA approved and available without a prescrition. Devrom is very effective and costs much less than other products. A trusted name for decades and used widely for flatulence odor relief by people with varying medical conditions. Devrom can be found in pharmacies or ordered online as it is an FDA regulated medication available without a prescription. The FDA has posted the Final Monograph for Internal Deodorants.

Walk From Obesity and Devrom

The annual Walk From Obesity event is gearing up to happen at locations across the U.S. This event exists to provide support and awareness to this very serious chronic disease affecting people across all kinds of demographics. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), in 2008 only one state had an obesity prevalence of less than 20%, Colorado. This multifaceted disease and its related health conditions (heart disease and diabetes) causes a serious strain on the health of our country's population as well as the health care system. One way to treat obesity is through bariatric surgery. The end result is a fantastic drop in weight along with a reduction/total elimination of other conditions. In addition, people sometimes experience malodorous flatulence and stool. To remedy this, they can take FDA approved Devrom chewable tablets and capsules to effectively eliminate any offensive smelling odor. Devrom has been involved in past events as well as this years and you might find a sample in your goodie bag at the event!
