Basic Skills In Caring For a Urostomy

During The Day
Urinary ostomy pouches are drainable with a valve at the end to control the back flow of urine.  It is necessary to drain your urostomy pouch during the day.  Usually it is every 2 to 4 hours depending on how much fluid you drink.  It is generally recommended to drink 8 to 10 glasses of water each day.

During The Night
Urostomy pouch systems can be attached to "night" drainage bags such as the Bard Bedside Night Drainage Bag 154502.  All brands have this ability and these bags have a larger capacity so you don't have to empty it as frequently during sleeping hours.
To connect to the night drainage bag:
Attached the adapter on the night drain bag.
Connect the end of the urostomy pouch to the connector of the tubing.
Open the pouch tap
Check the tubing for kinks and remove them.
Night drain bags can stand free or hang on the side of your bed.

When it becomes time to empty your night drain bag:
Close the valve at the end of the pouch.
Remove the tubing from the pouch.
Empty the urine from the drain bag and rinse it with water.
